Super Arcade Football

Super Arcade Football is an enjoyable and simple top-down retro football game with both a story-based campaign and multiplayer.

After having played the awesome “Super Arcade Racing” by the same developer, I was fully hooked on this concept of retro sports games. And Super Arcade Football is essentially football made simple. We can shoot, tackle, and pass – and that’s about it. Until modifiers come into play, that is. These add mud to the playing field, stones that fall from the sky, and even turn the grass into ice.

Initially, the campaign was extremely fun, but then about 50% into the game, things got super difficult. The opponent teams now move faster, run faster, never miss a pass, and are really hard to tackle. The game moves from being a creative and enjoyable relaxing game to a brutal experience where the restart button gets abused. The only way to stand a chance is to do constant tackles and shoot from all parts of the field.

Everything works well, but the retro design makes it hard to distinguish the teams. There are both men and women with various haircuts and colors on all teams, and the team shirts typically have very similar colors - so a clear passing game is not a thing.

Despite the difficulty spike, the game remains enjoyable as a “pick-up-and-play” experience with 3-minute matches. And the gameplay is amazing enough to keep me going.

Super Arcade Football monetizes via relatively frequent ads that can thankfully be removed via a single $2.99 iAP. The first half of the campaign is a masterstroke, and if the levels get too difficult, there’s always the multiplayer. If you like hard games, this is perfect for you.
